History of Tango: Tango is one of the most genuine cultural productions of the River Plate, principally the cities of Buenos Aires, Rosario, and Montevideo. It is a cultural fusion with African, Latin American, and European origins arising from the "mestizaje" (race mixing) of immigrants who arrived to the River Plate around the second half of the 19th century.

Tango, in addition to being a dance or kind of music, is a central component of the River Plate culture that spread all over the world, and has a strong presence in Colombia, Finland, France, and Japan.

Although perhaps the best definition of Tango comes from one of its greatest musicians, Anibal Troilo: "tango is a feeling that is danced," in order to relate to tango, Buenos Aires has various options:

Tango Shows:In San Telmo there are many bars and restaurants that offer Tango Shows with or without a dinner. Normally there are about two or three dance pairs and a live band. A prior reservation is essential and we can take care of that at the hostel. The prices are around 140 pesos per person. There are shows every day of the week.

Milongas: Milongas are like discotheques where tango is danced almost exclusively. They usually have a group class beforehand and are frequented by the locals. Each day of the week there are around one or two taking place. Sometimes it is best to make reservations and we can do that at the hostel. They cost between 10 and 15 pesos per person.
